There’s a first time for everything, and for most Gold Coast locals, that includes hiring a truck. Maybe you’re moving house, clearing out the garage, picking up a lounge suite you found online, or finally tackling that garden project you’ve been putting off. Whatever the job, the idea of driving something bigger than the family car can feel a little daunting the first time around.
The good news? It’s far easier than you think. We’ve been helping locals hire trucks, utes, vans and tippers since 2002, and the vast majority of our customers have never driven anything larger than a sedan before they walk through our door. By the time they drive away, they’re wondering why they were ever nervous. So if you’re weighing up your first hire, here’s a straightforward guide to everything you need to know.
Step one: work out what size you actually need
The most common mistake first-timers make is guessing. People either hire something far too small and end up doing five trips, or book a big truck for a job a van could have handled. A few minutes of planning up front saves you time, money and a lot of back-and-forth on the day.
Start by picturing the biggest items you need to move. Are we talking a few boxes and a bookshelf, or a full three-bedroom house worth of furniture? As a rough guide:
- A ute or van is perfect for smaller jobs: a single item pickup, a studio or one-bedroom move, delivering stock, green waste runs, or shifting tools and materials for a job.
- A 3-tonne pantech truck suits most standard house moves and larger loads. It’s our most popular option for a reason, and importantly, you can drive it on a standard car licence.
- A 6 or 8-tonne pantech is the way to go for bigger homes, office relocations, or particularly bulky furniture. These require a Medium Rigid (MR) licence.
- A tipper is the unsung hero for anyone moving sand, soil, gravel or garden waste. The hydraulic tipping body means you’re not shovelling everything out by hand, and you won’t need a trailer.

Step two: check your licence
This is the question we hear most, and it’s a fair one. The reassuring answer is that you can drive a huge range of vehicles on a standard Australian car (Class C) licence, including our utes, vans and the popular 3-tonne pantech truck. No special endorsement, no extra test, nothing to organise in advance.
If your job calls for a 6-tonne or 8-tonne truck, you’ll need a Medium Rigid (MR) licence, and our mini bus requires a Light Rigid (LR) licence. For the everyday moving and hauling jobs most people hire for, though, your normal licence has you covered.
A quick word for younger drivers: if you’re on your P-plates, you may still be able to hire from us at our discretion, though a higher insurance excess applies. It’s always worth a phone call to confirm what works for your situation before you plan the day around it.
Step three: don’t stress about the driving
Here’s the reassurance that surprises most first-timers. If you can drive a car, you can drive one of our trucks. They really do handle much like a normal vehicle, just with a bit more presence on the road.
Our fleet is set up to make life easy for newcomers. The trucks have automatic transmissions, so there’s no crunching gears or riding a heavy clutch. They come with large mirrors that give you a genuinely good view of what’s around you, which makes lane changes and reversing far less nerve-wracking than you’d imagine. As we like to say, it’s about as tricky as riding a four-wheeled 3-tonne bike.
A few simple habits will have you driving like a pro. Take corners a touch wider than usual to account for the length. Leave a little extra braking distance, especially with a full load. Be mindful of your height near awnings, drive-throughs and car park entrances. And take your time, because there’s no prize for rushing. Within ten minutes of setting off, most people have completely forgotten they were nervous.
Step four: know what’s included (and what isn’t)
Nobody likes surprises when it comes to cost, and hidden fees are exactly the kind of thing that puts people off hiring in the first place. We built our business on doing the opposite. What we quote is what you pay.

It’s also worth knowing that a bit of moving kit comes along for the ride. Every truck includes complimentary furniture blankets and a standard two-wheel trolley to save your back and protect your belongings. If you’re shifting something awkward, we hire out specialised stair trolleys and piano dollies at reasonable rates too.
Step five: booking is the easy part
